Clean Up Your Act with These 3 Easy Steps

Welcome back to another installment of BLT’s Real Talk! In case you haven’t already subscribed to my email list (hint: you totally should – everyone is doing it) let me say thank you one more time for all of your input, feedback, comments & questions from the first blog post! Since there was an awesome response to the topic of skincare, today we’re going to talk about some easy little changes you can make in your daily routine RIGHT NOW to help improve your skin! These are all super simple steps we all can (should) do to help with literally any skin type. If you have skin, these tips are for you.

  1. H2O!! Girl, do not be thirsty. Literally or figuratively. This is one of those “no duh” eye roll suggestions that honestly can’t be emphasized enough! Not getting enough water throughout the day can contribute to every skin problem from acne, inflammation, dull complexion, dark circles, puffiness and even fine lines. Your skin is made up of a bunch of cells, which are all made up of water more than anything else. Keeping your hydration in check can help the body flush out toxins and blemishes, keep all those skin cells plump and supple (aka: less wrinkles), plus it helps to keep your oil levels more balanced and giving your face that healthy glow. My favorite method for figuring out how much Takeya Water Bottlewater you should be drinking is to take your body weight, cut that in half, and drink that many ounces per day. So let’s say you weigh 150 lbs. Half of 150 = 75, so you would want to drink 75 oz of water per day. Of course you might need a little more if you’re out in the sun or working out a ton, but this is a good estimate of what you want to drink throughout the day. I’m a bit of a water bottle connoisseur, but my current favorite is my 40 oz stainless steel Takeya ThermoFlask. They might not be the cutest water bottles ever invented, but they get the job done at a fraction of the cost. You can buy these babies on Amazon, BUT instead you should call your mom and ask her to take you to Costco because they have a 2-pack for $30 right now. I mean really, how can you beat that?
  1. Silk pillowcases are super trendy because they are super awesome. We spend about ⅓ of our day sleeping, which means, unless you’re one of the rare back-sleepers of the world, your face spends a third of its time on your pillow case. The average cotton pillowcase is a perfect place for bacteria to hang out and the cotton fibers cause all kinds of friction while you’re sleeping. Silk, on the other hand, has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties, and its smooth texture is a game changer for your skin, hair, and lash extensions. If you’re someone who suffers from acne or is extremely acne-prone (like me!) you want to make sure that the bacteria from any blemishes you get doesn’t transfer to your pillowcase and back to your pretty little face the next night. Unless you wash your cotton pillowcase EVERY night, that’s inevitably going to happen. The silk also has a serious lack of friction to help to prevent those sleep creases you get from your face being smooshed against your pillow all night. This also eliminates the abrasiveness a cotton pillowcase can have. I know we don’t usually associate a cotton pillowcase as abrasive, but it can really be problematic for people with acne, rosacea, or sensitive skin. Bonus round: these smooth operators also help to keep your hair less frizzy, reduces breakage, and helps prevent premature shedding of your lash extensions from sleep-related friction! There’s a zillion of these out there with a pretty wide range of price points. After tons of research, the one I have tried out and love is from Alaska Bear. This pillow case has nearly 2,000 five-star reviews, and for good reason! The pillowcases are 100% silk, hypoallergenic, and comes in a ton of different colors. Icing on the cake is that they are under $30 so you can go ahead a treat yo’self to a little luxury.
  1. Don’t let gross dirty things touch your face. This is another thing that sounds so simple it’s stupid, but you’d be shocked how much bacteria the average person puts on their face on the daily! Three of the biggest culprits are glasses, makeup brushes, and our own hands. With glasses, make sure you clean the frames at least a couple times a week. Whether you’ve got eyeglasses or just sunglasses, these babies touch our faces throughout the day and should be wiped down to reduce the introduction of bacteria where they sit. My personal favorite cleaning products for this job are rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. Guarantee you have at least one of those in the house so hop to it! Makeup brushes can get seriously disgusting. You not only need to clean them to remove makeup from getting caked onto the bristles, but also to make sure you aren’t dabbing a bacteria-coated brush onto your favorite highlighter over and over again. There are a million brush cleaners you can buy, but I usually just use baby shampoo to remove the makeup, then spray hydrogen peroxide on the brushes and let them air dry in the sun. Last, but not least, are your very own hands. A lot of us don’t even realize that we touch our faces while we’re talking, reading or thinking. Don’t even get me started on how dirty hands are, just keep them away from your precious face. Since I’m a little bit of a germaphobe, I always keep the EO Products Hand Sanitizer Spray on hand. Kills 99.9% of germs and is made without any nasty ingredients. You can pick it up at Sprouts or order online. Go with the Peppermint & Citrus scent.  You can thank me later.

Alright boys and girls, class is dismissed! Commit to taking these three easy steps for the next two weeks and see if you don’t notice some improvement with your skin. As always, I’m dying to hear what you think and what you want to know so drop me a line in the comments below or in the handy-dandy Suggestion Box!

Thanks lovie!
